Kleybanova, Gajdosova, Zakopalova Reach Quarter-Finals

The top three seeds - Alisa Kleybanova, Jarmila Gajdosova and Klara Zakopalova - all advanced to the Estoril Open quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Kleybanova, the World No. 25 from Moscow, was broken six times and hit five double faults but managed to beat No. 74-ranked Mathilde Johansson of France 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in just over two-and-a-half hours. She will next face German Kristina Barrois, who knocked out sixth-seeded Russian Elena Vesnina 6-4, 6-3 in 86 minutes.

Gajdosova improved to a 6-2 mark on her third appearance at the WTA International tournament after the second seed defeated fellow Australian Casey Dellacqua 6-2, 6-4 in 70 minutes. The pair had never met before. Gajdosova will now challenge Monica Niculescu, a 6-4, 6-4 victor over qualifier Sloane Stephens.

Zakopalova hit eight double faults and won 49 per cent of service point, but managed to beat qualifier Anastasija Yakimova 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in just under two hours.

"It was a very tough match for me, she is a very good player," said Zakopalova. "She fought a lot and moved well. I am very happy I am through. I am very satisfied that I am in the quarter-finals. But I will play against Anabel [Medina-Garrigues] and that will be very tough."

Elsewhere, eighth seed Greta Arn of Hungary was forced to retire due to a left thigh muscle injury early in the second set of her match against Anabel Medina Garriques. The 28-year-old Spaniard was leading the 2007 titlist by a 6-2, 1-0 score-line with 59 minutes played.

Russian Alla Kudryavtseva joined Kleybanova in the last eight after she converted six of nine break point opportunities to beat Romina Oprandi of Italy 6-4, 7-6(3) in 89 minutes. She now meets Johanna Larsson.
