Daniilidou Works Overtime; Teenager Watson One Win From Main Draw

Former World No. 14 Eleni Daniilidou worked overtime for a spot in the final round of women's qualifying at the Estoril Open on Sunday.

The 28-year-old Greek took to Court 2 shortly after 10 a.m. to face Alexandra Panova of Russia. Three hours and 26 minutes later, in a match played in intense heat, Daniilidou walked to the net a 7-5, 6-7(2), 7-5 victor.

Barely 90 minutes later, Daniilidou started her second match against China's Shengnan Sun. She went onto beat Sun 6-4, 6-2 in just 62 minutes.

Earlier in the afternoon, British teenager Heather Watson kept her nerve to beat Katarzyna Piter of Poland 6-4, 6-4.

The 18-year-old Watson hit eight aces and managed to save nine break points for victory in one hour and 45 minutes.

Watson will next challenge World No. 88 Tamira Paszek of Austria, who beat German Laura Siegemund 7-5, 6-4 in one hour and 52 minutes.

Paszek is 4-0 against British players, having beaten Anne Keothavong twice and Elena Baltacha and Melanie South on one occasion.

Elsewhere, Sloane Stephens knocked out fellow American Madison Brengle 6-2, 6-3 in 66 minutes and Beatriz Garcia Vidagany edged past Madalina Gojnea 1-6, 7-6(2), 6-3.
