Medina Garrigues, 28, beat Simona Halep, eighth seed Greta Arn, third seed Klara Zakopalova and Monica Niculescu en route to her 16th WTA final and first since 2009.

"I think I played well this week," the Spaniard said. "I had some lucky moments - in the first round I was close to losing a set, and another close match with Klara Zakopalova as well. It wasn’t as easy as it looked, it was very tough.

"In today’s match I played very aggressively, and very high and deep. She couldn't [play] her game. I felt a little pain in my back during the match, but I have had it before, so I know what the problem is. But I think I’ll be okay for Madrid."

Medina Garrigues improved to a 14-9 match record on the season and to 10-6 in WTA finals.
