Paszek Wins First Qualifying Match; Three Seeds Lose

Austrian Tamira Paszek, the highest-ranked player in the women's qualifying draw at World No. 88, knocked out Ekaterina Ivanova of Russia 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 48 minutes at the Estoril Open on Saturday.

Paszek goes onto meet 23-year-old German Laura Siegemund in the second round. Siegemund improved to an 11-5 match record on the season with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Portuguese Ana Claro in 59 minutes.

Three seeded players in qualifying - No. 4 Vesna Dolonts, No. 5 Petra Martic and No. 8 Michaella Krajicek - all lost in the first round.

Dolont s paid the price for winning just 48 per cent of service points against Madison Brengle, who won 6-2, 7-5 in one hour and 43 minutes.

World No. 202 Arina Rodionova converted 50 per cent of her break point opportunities to defeat Martic 6-1, 6-1 in 57 minutes, while Beatriz Garcia Vidagany saved nine of 11 break points to beat Krajicek 6-3, 6-1 in one hour and 35 minutes.

British teenager Heather Watson fought back from a one-set and 1-2 deficit to lead Karolina Sprem 1-6, 6-3, 3-0. Sprem retired with a left wrist injury after 78 minutes of play.

Ten women's qualifying matches were completed on Saturday, which began three-and-a-half hours later than scheduled due to rain. Four qualifiers will earn main draw berths.
