Anderson To Meet Hanescu...Again!

Seventh seed Kevin Anderson was made to work against Thiemo de Bakker on his Estoril Open debut on Monday.

Anderson beat the No. 81-ranked Dutchman 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in two hours and 27 minutes on Centralito.

The 24-year-old South African won his first ATP World Tour title at the SA Tennis Open in Johannesburg (d. Devvarman) in February. He has a 16-9 match record on the season.

Anderson will meet Victor Hanescu in the second round. The pair have already met twice this year (Hanescu leads 2-0), including last week in Barcelona.

Hanescu beat Portuguese favourite Rui Machado 6-3, 6-3 in 82 minutes. Hanescu, a quarter-finalist in 2004 (l. to F. Mayer), hit four aces and won 68 per cent of service points for his ninth win of the season.

The 29-year-old Hanescu's best result this year came earlier this month at Casablanca, when he advanced to the semi-finals (l. to Starace).

France's Jeremy Chardy recorded just his fourth win of the year after he defeated Adrian Mannarino 6-4, 6-3 in just over 90 minutes. Chardy hit eight aces and converted five of 17 break point opportunities.

Edouard Roger-Vasselin, Flavio Cipolla, Frederik Nielsen and Pedro Sousa also qualified for the main draw earlier on Monday.
