Third-seeded Italian Karin Knapp enjoyed a confident start to her Estoril Open campaign Monday with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Portuguese wild card Frederica Piedade in 71 minutes.
The 20-year-old Lutago resident converted seven break point opportunities against the World No. 292. Knapp reached her maiden final on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour at Antwerp in February (l. to Henin).
Sixth seed Klara Zakapalova of the Czech Republic also advanced to the last 16 of the Tier IV event, after defeating Russian Evgeniya Rodina 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.
In the top half of the women’s draw No. 7 seed Sophia Arvidsson of Sweden knocked out American Lilia Osterloh 7-5, 6-4 in one hour and 41 minutes and Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova beat Stephanie Dubois 6-0, 6-1.
Two seeded teams were beaten in the women’s doubles draw, including second seeds Gabriela Navratilova and Monica Niculescu and Czech third seeds Iveta Benesova and Petra Cetkovska.
Top seeds Maria Kirilenko and Flavia Pennetta enjoyed safe passage into the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Natalie Grandin and Camille Pin.
