Garcia & Prieto Edge Past No. 4 Seeds

Two teams who have won ATP titles this season locked horns in the Estoril Open first round on Monday.

Argentines Martin Garcia and Sebastien Prieto defeated No. 4 seeds American Eric Butorac and Jamie Murray of Scotland 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 (Match TB) in 76 minutes.

Garcia and Prieto, improve to 5-7 this year having won the Buenos Aires title in February over Albert Montanes and Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo.

Butorac and Murray suffer their second consecutive first round exit.

The pair has a 10-5 season record. They clinched back-to-back ATP titles in San Jose (d. Haggard-Schuettler) and Memphis (d. Knowle-Melzer) in February.

Garcia and Prieto will next meet either Americans Scott Lipsky and Tripp Phillips or Belarusian wild cards Max Mirnyi and Vladimir Voltchkov.

In the women’s competition, Stephanie Cohen-Aloro and Selima Sfar knocked out No. 2 seeds Marion Bartoli and Maria Kirilenko 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 (Match TB).

But there was better news for third-seeded Eleni Daniilidou and Jasmin Woehr, who edged past Alberta Brianti and Margalita Chakhnashvili 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 (Match TB).
