Conchita Martinez Granados safely negotiated her way past fellow Spaniard Magui Serna, the 2002 and 2003 Estoril Open winner, who has struggled in recent times with injury, on Saturday.
Martinez Granados booked her place in the second round of the qualification competition at the Estadio Nacional with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over the former World No. 19 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.
While the top-ranked player in the women’s field advanced, No. 2 seed Tiantian Sun of China was knocked out by Czech Barbora Strycova 6-0, 7-5.
Ukrainian Yulia Beygelzimer accounted for third-seeded Anastassia Rodionova 6-3, 6-1, while No. 4 seed Ma. Emilia Salerni was beaten by Indian Shikha Uberoi 6-0, 7-5.
There was better news for Czech Katerina Bohmova (No. 5 seed), Victoria Azarenka (No. 6), Germany’s Sandra Kloesel (No. 7).
However, eighth-seeded Anne Kremer of Luxembourg tumbled out in the first round to Croatian Ana Vrljic 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
The two Portuguese players in the draw, Joana Pangaio and Catarina Ferreira, also lost.
