Pennetta Survives Match Point for Win

Top seed Flavia Pennetta gained revenge over Russian Elena Vesnina in the first round of the Estoril Open on Monday.

Pennetta beat 19-year-old Vesnina 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(2) in two hours and three minutes, surviving one match point at 5-6 in the third set.

Vesnina, ranked No. 62 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, beat Pennetta 6-2, 6-1 earlier this season in Amelia Island.

Pennetta will play either Estonian Maret Ani or a qualifier in the second round.

Fourth-seeded Roberta Vinci pulled out of her opening match against Italian Antonella Serra Zanetti with a right leg injury, paving the way for a shift of seed placings.

Vera Dushevina, the No. 5 seed, took Vinci’s place in the draw and fell 6-4, 6-4 to Serra Zanetti on Centralito at the Estadio Nacional.

France’s Virginie Razzano lost to Mariana Diaz-Oliva of Argentina 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Diaz Oliva now awaits the winner of Bethanie Mattek or Eleni Daniilidou.

Paola Suarez, ranked No. 317 in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour rankings, defeated Maria Sanchez Lorenzo 7-5, 6-3.

In the final round of qualifying on Monday, Kristina Barrois, Katerina Bohmova, Natalia Gussoni and Shikha Uberoi won their places in the main draw.
