Second seed and defending champion Magui Serna of Spain advanced
to the second round of the Estoril Open with a straight sets
victory over Elena Tatarkova. Serna, the 24-year-old from
Las Palmas, Spain, earned a meeting with Hungary's Pedula
Mandula with a 6-3, 6-1 win against lucky loser Tatarkova.
Mandula booked her place in the last 16 with a victory over
Portuguese wild card Frederica Piedade by the same scoreline.
Also progressing on day two at the Estadio Nacional was Spain's
Maria Sanchez Lorenzo, who upset No. 8 seed Patricia Wartusch
5-7, 6-3, 6-4 on court Central. The 25-year-old will now face
Stephanie Cohen Aloro of France, who overcame Russian starlet
Maria Kirilenko on Monday.
Elsewhere, fourth seed Rita Grande had to retire from her
first round match against Switzerland's Emmanuelle Gagliardi
after straining an adductor muscle after losing the first
set 6-3. Fifth seed Henrieta Nagyova progressed however, defeating
Conchita Martinez Granados 6-1, 6-3.
